“Are E Cigs Safe” is by far the most asked question about electronic cigarettes, so I'm going to quickly outline some of the facts abotu E-Cigarette safety for you! To begin, and some of you may know this, smoking electronic cigarettes means that you are ingesting three things: nicotine, flavoring, and a base to hold those two together. The base is usually this substance called propylene glycol, we'll discuss that. So with that in hand, let's look at the safety concerns. And remember, these devices may not be COMPLETELY proven yet, but there is no way they could be worse than tobacco. Tobacco is just the worst thing ever (my dad has been battling lung cancer for a year and it's awful).
Propylene Glycol. This stuff is at the center of the debate surrounding e-Cigarettes. The USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that pharmaceutical grade Propylene Glycol is non-carcinogenic. It is used in all medicinal inhalers, food dye/flavorings and in most toothpastes and mouthwash – among other things. It's really the duct tape of substances. One of the concerns that many people have is raised by anti e-cigarette people saying that propylene glycol is the stuff used in de-icer and anti-freeze. This is true. But not for the propylene glycol you find in your e-Liquid. There is pharmaceutical grade PG and industrial grade PG, and you can be sure as hell that the one used in your e-Cigarette is pharmaceutical grade and safe for consumption.
One of the other concerns raised by groups like the FDA is about knowing how much nicotine is being released with each puff. Not much to say about that besides that there have been zero issues raised by people overdosing on nicotine from them. If you're still concerned, just get a lower strength e-Liquid or cartomizer! If you are asking “Are e Cigs safe?” because of nicotine levels, than it's really easy to remedy that, and I guarantee no companies are stuffing their things with more nicotine than they say – that's illegal and pointless.
And the last point is concerning that guy in Florida who's e-Cigarette exploded and he lost his teeth. This had a lot of people asking: are e cigarette safe? Well that guy was using a “modded” e-Cig and he most likely did it wrong – if you saw the picture of him than it's not hard to believe. But most electronic cigarettes that you'll buy (the e cig starter kits we review on this site) are not modded and they use trusted lithium ion batteries that have never exploded on anyone.
When it comes down to it, you can't deny that electronic cigarettes have not been fully tested. But even more important, you can't deny that they are non-carcinogenic and couldn't kill 500,000 people every year, no matter how many batteries explode. That's all there is to it.
